There is nothing more exciting than seeing two great volleyball teams going the distance — to the end of the line — to a five-setter. This weekly column will provide an off-the-court look at those athletes around U SPORTS volleyball, with five sets of questions on five different topics.

Food

It’s a game day, what is your pre-game meal?

Chicken, rice and vegetables

What is your cheat day food?

Chicken Nuggets

If you had to cook one meal to impress, what are you serving?

Stir Fry

If you had to pick one meal to eat every day for the rest of your life, what is it?

Chips and Guacamole. You can’t tell me you could live without a good bowl of guac in your life

You are having a dinner and can invite any person past or present, who is at your table and why?

I would have Jamie Lynn Spears, to ask her why she would have the audacity to get pregnant and ruin Zoey 101 for everyone

School

What was it about your program that drew you in?

I always knew wanted to go into business, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to take within the faculty. After my first year business courses it became really clear that I spent all my time focusing on my accounting courses, so that’s what I decided to major in.

What teacher/mentor has been most influential on you growing up in school?

My club volleyball coach Dusty Freimark coached my for all three years of club volleyball while I was in highschool. She always pushed me to be my best, and also was a huge help through the recruiting process so I was able to choose a university that was the right fit for me academically and athletically.

The one academic achievement that you are most proud of?

Academic All-Canadian

What are the necessities in your bag everyday for school?

Lunch, my trusty calculator, and my Cookies by George reward card.

What is the best advice you received to balance school and sports?

Work smarter not necessarily harder and always make friends in your classes to swap notes!

One of the middles on UBC during our national final last year

What has been your most memorable volleyball moment in your career?

Winning Canada West last year

What has been your personal favourite dig/kill/block/assist?

I can’t think of a specific standout play.

Developing your game over the years, what was the one aspect that didn’t come as easy to you as the others?

When I was playing libero, serve receive took a lot of practice

Chemistry is a big part of any sport, who was that one teammate that you just clicked with on the court?

My roommate Tessa

You are stuck on an island and you are allowed three items. What are they?

  1. Coffee

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Reading minds so I know when to toss the appropriate amount of shade.

What topic/thing would you be able to lead a 40 minute lecture on without any preparation beforehand?

The history and evolution of coffee beans and the coffee industry

What would your friends consider as being “so you”?

Over-priced lattes

What stat of your life would you want to see most? (i.e. number of Tim coffees consumed)

Kevin MacDonald currently works as one of the primary Public Address Announcers for the Ryerson Rams and has served as the voice of the Rams Volleyball and Basketball teams for the last three seasons. He has worked on multiple National Volleyball Championships, on top of countless sets during the regular season. Kevin is currently enrolled in his junior year of Ryerson University's Radio and Television Arts, Sport Media program.
